The playing area where basketball is played is called the basketball court. It consists of a floor area which is rectangular is shape. There are two basket hoops at end of the court. The dimensions of the court differ as per the different associations. The NBA (National Basketball Association) defines the court size as 28.65 m by 15.24 m whereas the FIBA (Fédération Internationale de Basket-ball) defines it to be 28m by 15m. The game of basketball is played both indoors and outdoors. While the materials of the indoor court are essentially wood, especially maple, the outdoor courts are made up of concrete, asphalt or any other paving materials.
The basket hoops that are present in the longer end of the court are generally placed at a height of 3.05 m. However, the height of the basket is changed in case of youth basketball matches. The height is not only maintained in case of the hoops but also for the ceiling in case of the indoor courts. The general clearance height of the ceiling is 7.7 m for an indoor basketball court. The recommended height is 8.23 m.
There are various sections in a basketball court. They are centre circle, three-point line, perimeter, and area of low post, key, arc of restricted area along with other lines. Each of these sections has some or other significance in the game of basketball. Each association has separate demarcations that are different in their measurements. Even though there are various terms, the game is enjoyed by millions worldwide.
