Five players form a team trying to throw the ball into the basket at the end of the basketball court. The basket is defended by five players from the opposite team. Both teams assume predefined positions on a rectangular court. The basket is 18 inches in diameter and is mounted on a board at a height of 10 feet from the ground. Basketball has evolved to be one of the most popular games in the world.
A tree-point line marks the point that determines the score. If a basket is shot from behind the line, the team scores three points. If a basket is shot from a point in front of the line, the team scores two points. Rules of the game impose certain restrictions on the players violating which, the player is said to have committed a foul. In return, the opposing team can make free throws. They get to score one point if they are able to throw the ball through the basket. The team that scores the most points at the end of a predetermined time is declared the winner of the game.
Players are allowed to move on the basketball court by bouncing the ball in quick succession while walking or running. They are allowed to pass it over to a teammate if they feel like it. Dribbling the ball is essential if one is to use the pivot foot. Carrying the ball in hands is not allowed. Holding the ball in both hands before dribbling it is said to constitute a foul play inviting a penalty or a free throw.
